Horse Day is back and bigger than ever with free family activities celebrating all things equine this Saturday, June 1 at the Horse Palace at Exhibition Place in Toronto.
Horse Day festivities take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include riding demonstrations, opportunities to meet horses, tours of the Toronto Police Mounted Unit’s stable, autograph signings with notable equestrians, interactive stations, games, prizes and much more.
Among this year’s special guests are Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame jockey Sandy Hawley, who will be accompanied by the historic Queen’s Plate trophy; Sylvain Filion, Canada’s Driver of the Year for 2012; and Olympic Show Jumper Jennifer Foster, who rode for Canada at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Horse racing fans will also enjoy a special Northern Dancer exhibit featuring memorabilia from this legendary Canadian Thoroughbred. Among the various artifacts is Northern Dancer’s brass name plate from his stall at Windfields Farm in Oshawa where he was born and is now buried.
There’s also plenty to do for young horse enthusiasts! Kids are invited to create their very own stick pony and bring it to Horse Day to ride in a stick horse class. There will also be a colouring corner where kids can show off their artistic skills, plus story time sessions with Norman, the equine star of a children’s book that tells the story of how he overcame all odds to jump again after losing sight in one eye.
Now in its fifth year, Horse Day is designed to introduce the public to horses in a safe, fun environment. A province-wide initiative, Horse Day was started by the Ontario Equestrian Federation, an umbrella organization committed to equine welfare and providing leadership and support to the individuals, associations and industries in Ontario’s horse community.
