Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian Championships Heat Up On First Day of Competition

Under clear skies and unusually high temperatures, the first day of competition of the Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian Championships (CIEC), hosted by the Alberta Equestrian Federation, kicked off at the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping facility in Calgary, AB.

The Dressage competition saw 25 participants riding Test 2. The class was won by Carol Hall of Calgary, AB. riding Homayen on a score of 73.919%. In second place was Vanessa Creech-Terauds of Caistor Centre, ON. riding Finja, finishing with 72.568% while Sarah Sewell of Langley, BC took third on 70.676% aboard Brazil.

 In Dressage Team competition, Ontario is currently leading with a score of 140.946, while Alberta is in second with 137.297. British Columbia lays in third with a score of 135.946.

In Jumping, over a 1.10m course, Michelle Gulick of Calgary, AB and her partner Rockstar enjoyed a double clear performance, sealing the deal for first place riding a lightning fast jump off round with a time of 34.82. Paige Hobson of Casa Ris Estates, SK and Zealotic, made good on an error from round one over fence 8 in the jump off going clear, clocking in at 36.92 for second place and Ayla Martinoff of Langley, BC rode the course in 38.42 to take third place atop her horse, Elton.

In the Jumping Team competition Alberta is currently leading with 26 pts, while Saskatchewan is in second with 18. There’s a two-way tie for third between Ontario and British Columbia both with 13 pts.

In the Reining portion of the competition, Keisha Senum of Spiritwood, SK rode Peggy’s On Top to first place scoring 72 points for their pattern. Margaret Besuijen of Hythe, AB landed in second riding Chics Fancy Vixen, after holding first for much of the competition on 71 points. Not uncommon in reining, there was a tie for third between Janice Hepburn of of Cochrane, AB, riding My Skirt in the Dirt and Alexander Hibberd riding Sol of Hollywood, both earning 70.5 points.

In the Reining Team competition Alberta is currently leading with a score of 141.50 points, while Saskatchewan is in second with 139.5 points. Quebec rounds out the top three with 139.0 points.
