Jessie Phoenix and Selena O’Hanlon led the charge for Canadian Eventers at The Fork International Horse Trials

Selena O’Hanlon and Jessica Phoenix led the Canadian contingent at The Fork International Horse Trials, held April 1-5 in Norwood, N.C.

Phoenix, who hails from Cannington, Ont., had success with three different mounts across two divisions. Her best result came in the CIC2* division, where she rode Pavarotti, 13-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Don J. Good, to a sixth place finish. After earning a dressage score of 35 penalties, which proved to be the best in the division, they had the lead heading into the show jumping phase. Eight jumping faults put them into seventh place, but they moved up to their final sixth place position on a final score of 49 penalties after no jumping but six time faults cross country.

Paired with Patras VR, a 14-year-old Trakehner gelding owned by Kirk Hoppner, Phoenix also finished 11th in the CIC2* division on a final score of 52.40 penalties.

In the CIC3* division, Phoenix rode Donald Leschied’s 10-year-old Thoroughbred/Trakehner mare, A Little Romance, to a 15th place finish on a final score of 61.40, highlighted by a clear show jumping performance and a cross country round that incurred no jumping and just 3.60 time faults.

“I was really happy with all of the horses from the competition,” said Phoenix, a veteran of the Canadian Eventing Team who has represented Canada at multiple major games, including the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG). “For their first run of the year, I could not have asked for more.”

Phoenix’s teammate from WEG 2014, O’Hanlon of Kingston, Ont., also rode multiple mounts. She earned her top result in the CIC1* division, piloting Zephyr, a 13-year-old gelding owned by Kelly Damp, to a third place finish. The duo finished on their dressage score of 46.20 penalties after executing faultless performances in both the show jumping and cross country phases.

O’Hanlon also took eighth place in the CIC2* division with A First Romance, a 13-year-old Thoroughbred/Canadian Sport Horse gelding she co-owns with Morag O’Hanlon. Their performance was highlighted by a clear show jumping phase, and a cross country trip that incurred no jumping, and only 3.20 time penalties for an overall score of 50.40 penalties.

Paired with her WEG 2014 mount, Foxwood High, a 12-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding owned by John and Judy Rumble, O’Hanlon also took 11th place in the CIC3* division on an overall score of 58.20 penalties.
