Jump Canada Announces Team for CSIO4*-W Best Jump 2013, Brazil

Jump Canada announces the Canadian Show Jumping Team for the upcoming CSIO4*-W Best Jump 2013 being held in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The following riders and horses will travel to Porto Alegre, BRA to compete from October 3 – 6:

Ben Asselin (Calgary, AB) will ride Makavoy, a 10-year-old Selle Francaise mare.

Angela Covert (St. Lazare, QC) will ride Utan, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

Kelly Koss-Brix (Calgary, AB) will ride Chalocorada, an 11-year-old Holstein mare.

Chris Sorensen (Caledon, ON) will ride Bobby, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

The Brazilian Team is supported by Chef d’Equipe, Mark Laskin, Team Manager, Karen Hendry-Ouellette, Team Veterinarian, Dr. Sylvie Surprenant and Stable Manager, Darren Roberts.

Celebrating its 45th Anniversary, Best Jump 2013 will play host to top equestrian talent from around the world. Since its inception in 1969, the event has gained a reputation as an important event both nationally and internationally. This is the first time Canada will be represented and will also mark the debut of Kelly Koss-Brix, Ben Asselin’s sister, as part of the Canadian Show Jumping Team.

“We have a great group of riders heading to Brazil”, said Chef d’Equipe, Mark Laskin. “When picking the team, we tried to balance the competitive aspects with the development side of our program and I think we have the right mix, we are looking forward to a successful competition.”

The Brazilian show jumping tour is made possible through Sport Canada’s “Own the Podium”program, a national sport technical initiative designed to help Canada’s summer and winter athletes achieve podium success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A Nations Cup is the only competition in show jumping where riders, competing in teams of four, compete against other countries for top honours. The top three scores from each team are counted towards the final result of the two-round competition.
