MNR requests feedback on Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark protection plans

The Ministry of Natural Resources has posted two notices to the Environmental Registry regarding Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark, two grassland birds that are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, 2007.

The MNR is seeking your input on how the government should consider the recommendations provided by the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark Round Table, an advisory group established by government to provide advice on the development of a protection and recovery approach, including the government response statement, for these two grassland birds in Ontario. For more information about this and to submit comments, please visit the Ontario Environmental Registry and search for policy proposal notice number 012-1597. The comment period closes June 2, 2014.

Secondly, they are proposing an interim 14-month extension to the current exemption for agricultural operations with respect to Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark. This 14-month extension will provide additional time for the Ministry to further engage stakeholders and the public, to develop a protection and recovery approach for the species, and to evaluate the package of Round Table recommendations which includes a recommendation for a 10-year exemption for agricultural operations. For more information about this and to submit comments, please visit the Ontario Environmental Registry and search for regulatory proposal notice number 012-1596. The comment period closes June 2, 2014.

A recovery strategy containing scientific advice for the recovery of Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark was prepared and submitted to government in May 2013. Under the Endangered Species Act, the next step is to develop a government response statement which will identify the government’s recovery goal and actions that are supported for protection and recovery of the species. We hope to hear from you with respect to these Environmental Registry notices as your comments will help to inform the development of the government response statement for Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark in Ontario.
