All coaches will receive 2 points per module for completing the EC Concussions or EC Fostering Healthy Equestrian Environments training in the ECampus. EC will add the points to your NCCP Locker account automatically.
For the time being, certified coaches can purchase the Registered Coach Status. The Licenced Coach Status is only required if you are coaching at a Gold or Platinum EC sanctioned competition, work as a Coach Developer, evaluate Rider Levels, deliver Rookie Riders, or are coaching a national team. As an active certified coach, you would receive a 15% discount off the cost of the Licenced Coach status and may hold any level of EC Sport Licence needed for any other roles. If you are simply coaching and not competing as an athlete or an owner of a competitive horse, the bronze status may be all that’s needed, reducing the cost of the Sport Licence required.

Several national coach certification programs including CanTRA and CHA have been working with EC to ensure that their certified Instructors are recognized.
Currently accepted certifications include:
– Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) designation from CAC
• CanTRA Certified Instructor
• Provincial Vaulting Trainer Certification
• IGEQ International Trainers Passport
• Canadian Pony Club A
• Certified Horsemanship Association – Level 2+
Any national equestrian coaching certifications not currently recognized can apply to EC for review and recognition under the coach status program by contacting: coaching@equestrian.ca
Equestrian Canada will email you a link to Sterling Backcheck to complete a free police check once you’ve registered for a Coach Status. If you did not receive the link or cannot find the link, you can find it in the ECampus as a resource for your coach status, or contact coaching@equestrian.ca to have the link sent again.
Proof of insurance will be done by completing the insurance certificate that will be provided to you in the ECampus once you have applied for the Coach Status. There is a simple one page form that can be downloaded and sent to your insurance provider for completion. You will add a completed copy of the form to your ECampus transcript to provide proof of insurance.
The declaration of good character will be completed during the application process. Once enrolled in the Coach Status program, you will have a pathway added to your ECampus account which will outline the requirements to submit, provide forms and documents to be completed and provide upload options to import completed elements to your ECampus account.
All Coach Status’ are valid for one year from the date they are issued.
Starting July 01, 2023, Athletes must identify their coach (name and EC sportlicence) on entry forms for all levels of EC sanctioned competition. All competitions are now required to report the coach name and coach EC sportlicence # for each competition result submitted. Coaches at Gold and Platinum competitions must hold active Licensed Coach Status while coaches with athletes at Bronze and Silver competitions must hold Registered Coach Status at minimum.
Senior (over 18) athletes may indicate that they are self-coached, EC officials may review a person’s coach status information if it assists them in navigating specific situations, and EC will solicit and appreciate feedback from organizers, and officials, with emphasis on “onsite” procedure.
Coaches who do not hold the applicable status, must complete a Temporary Coach Status form, for each competition with athletes in attendance, and must submit the form and fee to the competition organizer.
Please see the phased-in timeline at equestrian.ca for formal competition and program access requirements.
An extension can be provided due to extenuating circumstances by contacting coaching@equestrian.ca
Certification is your record of being evaluated as a coach in your sport. Certification will never be taken away, however it may require some updating to bring your certification back to active status.
If you were certified many years ago and have not kept your certification active, you may wish to head to https://thelocker.coach.ca/ and see if they can help find your NCCP Locker account. The transcript of your coaching certification will be maintained in the Locker. To begin, once you have access to your own Locker account, you can begin updating your NCCP Active status. If the Locker account can not be found, you may need to contact the Coaching administrator at OE or EC to assist in finding your records.
If you are already working in a First Aid field (i.e. as a paramedic), you may substitute a letter from your employer confirming that your First Aid skills are up to date. The letter from your employer should be uploaded to your ECampus transcript as the First Aid Certificate for verification by a Coaching Administrator. This will need to be validated every 3 years and should be confirmed with coaching@equestrian.ca
As a Certified Instructor, you may choose either the Registered or Licenced coach status. If you will be administering Rider Level tests, then you need to have been approved as a rider level evaluator by your OE, and you will need to hold active Licenced Coach status. Coaches may hold any level of EC SportLicence to apply for the Coach Status – if you do not require more than the bronze status for any other purpose (ie competing yourself), then you may wish to only purchase the Bronze.
If you have completed training in the NCCP Locker that is not showing in your ECampus transcript, you may either provide a screenshot of the completed item on your locker transcript (upload in the ECampus as proof of completion) or contact coaching@equestrian.ca to notify them of the missing record. The training must be valid within 3 years.
If you have completed other training or required elements for your Coach Status, a copy of the certificate of completion can be uploaded in the ECampus to your transcript.
If you have completed a Vulnerable Sector check at any time, that may be submitted to complete the one-time requirement for a VSS. You will still need to complete an enhanced Police Information Check (E-Pic) every 3 years to maintain your Coach Status. That check can be done online and a link to the Sterling Backcheck site to complete the check for free will be emailed to you when you register for Coach Status. Previously completed Police Checks can be uploaded to your ECampus transcript for verification by a Coaching administrator.
If you are self-declaring as an experienced coach, the EC Application will ask you to self-declare your experience and your reference letters from students or employers will help determine your length of experience. Once you have applied for the Licensed Coach Status, you will be able to complete the application package to have your experience reviewed to obtain the certification exemption. If Equestrian Canada requires any further proof of your coaching history, they will contact you directly. The number of years of experience will increase annually until 2025, when there will be no option for certification exemption anymore. Currently, exemptions are only being granted for a time-based window – until 2025 to allow you time to complete certification. If you are approved for a Coach Status with a certification exemption, you will not need to apply again for the exemption, as long as you keep the Coach Status active.

A Coach Status is an approval to practice as a coach or instructor in Canada. It is issued by EC in partnership with its PTSO partners and confirms that a coach has completed mandatory training, met minimum safety standards and has adequate insurance coverage to provide equestrian instruction and coaching services in Canada.
When holding a Licensed Coach Status, you will have access to:
A 24/7 Legal Help Line to assist in various legal matters, including but not limited to human abuse allegations.
Allows coaches to receive advice and direction from professional lawyers regarding serious claims or more administrative matters, such as structuring agreements and contracts.
The service also provides legal counsel and indemnification, including abuse allegations with $25,000 per individual occurrence, with a $50,000 aggregate per individual per policy term.
The Coach Status Program does not replace the EC/NCCP Coaching Certification Program. The two are meant to work in tandem to confirm all instructors and coaches are properly screened and appropriately trained. Coach Statuses are the first step toward phased-in mandatory coach certification in the future, but certification will not be required to obtain a Coach Status in 2022.
Coach Status
A Coach Status verifies that coaches are insured, screened and trained in all necessary safety measures. A Status provides recognition as an active coach, whether you are certified or not.
Coach Certification
Coach Certification is the formal credentialing process that includes training and formal evaluation through independent assessment of coaching competencies and ongoing professional development requirements.
EC offers NCCP certification and recognizes additional certification programs.
Once enrollment, training and document submission is complete, Equestrian Canada strives for a standard processing time of 10 business days once applications are submitted completely. Processing times may be slower during peak periods.
Registered Coach and Licensed Coach Statuses are available for application and purchase along with the EC Sport Licence renewal. EC encourages all coaches to renew their EC Sport Licence at this time by logging in to their MyEC portal.
Coaching and Instruction Insurance is not currently included in the Coach Status. There is Legal Defense Coverage included in the Licensed Coach Status. The integrated insurance was removed from the 2021 offering of the Coach Status program in consideration of the feedback from coaches EC received after the initial announcement of the Coach Licence in Nov 2019.
The Personal Liability Insurance included in your PTSO membership does not include coaching insurance (insurance for the act of teaching an equestrian student). Coaches must hold independent insurance and provide proof of the insurance during the Coach Status application. A Certificate of insurance is provided through the ECampus to all applicants to have their insurer complete.
The Letter of Reference should be completed by one of the following:
• Employer – current or within the past 3 years
• Students/Athletes or their parent/guarding – current or within the past 3 years
• Co-workers – coaches working with you within your current coaching setting or who have worked with you in the past 3 years
A simple form template for the Letter of Reference and an electronic form to quickly and simply complete the request to a peer for a letter of reference is included in the Coach Status pathway in your ECampus account.
In 2022, any coach accompanying an athlete to an EC Sanctioned competition must hold a Registered Coach Status at minimum. Coaches who wish to deliver existing EC programs must hold a valid Licensed Coach Status. This includes:
NCCP Coach Developers;
Canadian Equestrian Team Coaches;
Rookie Riders Lead Instructors; and,
Learn to Ride Lead Instructors & Evaluators.
All active coaches and instructors in the equine industry are encouraged to obtain a Coach Status. This will be required for all coaches by 2025. Please refer to the phased-in timeline for formal competition and program access requirements.
In Equestrian sport, it is common for members to wear many hats – owner, athlete, coach, official, facility owner, competition organizer, etc. Prior to the introduction of the Coach Status program, certified coaches needed to maintain an EC Sport Licence as one of the requirements of having Active status. This program has simply expanded to allow uncertified coaches to self-declare for Coach Status, and the level of screening requirements has been adjusted to respect the new Safe Sport policies adopted by Equestrian Canada in 2020.
https://www.equestrian.ca/about/governance/policies
The minimum level of Sport License required for ALL Coaches has been reduced to Bronze in 2021.
The Coach Status is not only required for coaches at competition but setting a standard for coaching in the equestrian community, whether at competition or working in a training setting. Parents, facility owners and athletes can be assured of the coaches screening and training to ensure that a safe environment is being created to enjoy equestrian sport. Equestrian Canada is enforcing the Status at competition as that is where EC has governance – there are rules for competing. We know that coaches hold a position of trust and authority with their athletes and participants (human and equine) and believe that as the expectation from the community that minimum Safe Sport standards are available to coaches, they would choose to adhere to the same standards that professional coaches do.
Inspired by and in cooperation with the federal government’s Safe Sport initiative, our new Coach Status Program is designed to provide our coaches with the training and screening they need to elevate Canada’s equestrian experience and make it safer for all involved. While we treasure the traditions we share as equestrians, we’re also eager to bring the sport in line with current standards and the values that help define us as Canadians.
Across our country, coaches play a pivotal role in the foundation of equestrian sport. They are tasked with teaching sound methods and techniques while also fostering relationships that help shape the identity we all share. These are significant responsibilities, especially when it involves equestrians that are new to the sport. We’ve designed the new program to ensure that, throughout the Canadian equestrian community, coaches can meet this challenge with the utmost professionalism and care. Although the new Coach Statuses are paving the way, the evolution of safety in our sport will only occur when the entire community commits to the same mission.
The Licenced Coach Status is available to any EC NCCP Certified Coach or Instructor, OR a coach who has:
– Recognized formal training (other national coaching certification or Advanced Coaching Diploma);
– Post-secondary education in equine; or,
– 15+ years of coaching experience.
Proof of alternate certification or experience will be requested by EC during the application process.
